SPRING 2013
The days are getting longer finally, the temperatures seem to be creeping up slowly
and we are all looking ahead to even more sunshine. To celebrate the change of
season and kiss the winter blues away we kicked up our heals recently at our annual
Spring Dance, an event residents, staff and family members look forward to each
year!
We have also just about completed our facelift of the inside of Golden Pond to
modernize and update main areas as well as common spaces like the sunroom,
lobby, bathrooms and dining rooms. We have taken down wallpaper, painted,
replaced furniture, carpet and light fixtures. We hope you will like what we have
done!
Earlier this month we had a special opportunity to head over to Hopkinton High
School for a tea with the Honor Society students. We had the most amazing time and
want to thank the students. Many of our residents who went were surprised by the
students who they described as very intelligent, well-spoken and friendly. We really
felt welcomed and we also want to thank the Hopkinton Senior Center who graciously
picked us up with their van.
Speaking of invitations, we have recently been invited to join an area non-profit
agency called Bridges: Growing Older, Growing Together to partner in this exciting
intergenerational program along with a local senior center and one of the elementary
schools. The program is designed to unite elementary school students with senior
members of the community promoting mutual understanding, respect and friendship
between the generations. The initiative helps to promote positive attitudes about
aging through six weeks of classes/activities and projects. At Golden Pond, we
recognize the unique and special relationships children can have with their
grandparents or other elders, and despite the fact that many families are forced to
live apart due to jobs, careers etc. we feel it is still essential to both the seniors and
the children to have opportunities together to learn from one another as only they
can. Children have so much to offer our seniors, they bring back memories of raising
their own children, they offer energy and enthusiasm and such a fresh perspective
that is so important to maintain as we age. Often after a visit with the children, our
residents will smile and laugh so much more often that the casual observer will even
notice the positive energy the children bring to all of us!
With that in mind, we continue to see our beloved children from Building Blocks
Academy weekly and they continue to visit us and we always enjoy their company,
laughter and smiles. We have begun work on a quilt together with the kids which will
be on display both spaces in the coming months. We continue to plan many trips out
each week to places like the bookstore, the library and many different shopping
venues like Kohl’s, Target, Home Goods and TJ Maxx and more.
